In this Ted Talk, Swedish photographer, Erik Johansson, speaks about his interest in creating photo-realistic images that capture an idea more than they do a moment. Since the birth of photography, people have argued over the medium’s ability to capture “reality.” In recent years, that argument has become ever more prevalent as photo-editing software has come into commercial use. Since Johansson claims that he is trying to capture an idea more than a moment, the argument over the reality of an image does not really pertain to his surreal mental visions that he turns into photo-realistic images.

Ryan McGinley recently had a show in London’s Alison Jacques Gallery involving his new series “Wondering Comma.” The exhibition ended in December, but you should definitely check out his work on his website since it epitomizes what it means to be young and free.
This image—in particular—reminds me of a place my friends and I call the “Water Hole.” It is a place where kids from various high schools would gather and swing off rope swings, ride bikes off jumps, and fall from trees into a calm watered lake that was set fittingly within a tree lined Pennsylvanian valley. There is nothing better than flying on a tire swing, releasing your grip, and falling ever so gently into the calm blue water below. Our time at the Water Hole was serene, jubilant, and something that will forever remind me of my youth.
